2.2kW spindle overkill? Power consumption considerations

So the 1.5kW spindles linked to in the BOM have ludicrous postage to where I am, almost doubling the price.

On the other hand, there is a place that offer’s free delivery to me. I would prefer a water-cooled spindle however, and the only version available is 2.2kW.

Question 1, is there anything obviously concerning about the linked model?
Question 2, I’m wondering the extra power consumption of 2.2kW. In theory, can the VFD set the power of the spindle to the equivalent of a 1.5kW model anyway?

I still need a solution for the water, but with postage taken into consideration, this model with VFD is far cheaper than the 1.5kW models linked in the BOM.

Cheers.

Oh, and also still wondering about the width of the belts? Is it 9mm?

I have no experiences with the 2.2Kw variant, but I think the 1.5KW works great - so the 2.2 must be better!

The power rating is not the continuous power draw of the spindle, only the max power draw when its underload. So leave that at the default of the spindle and changed the movements path to reduce chip loads.

my 1.5KW air cooled spindle only get warm to touch, even with running it at low RPMs in aluminium. for that reason I struggle to see the benefits of running a water-cooled variant unless you’ve got really low RPMs. I’ve had mine running for hours and not had any issues with temperature.

I would suspect that links above for the spindle is more than suitable!

I would recommend a VFD drive with has MODBUS or RS-485 built into it, this’ll allow for easy control of the spindle motor, IE turn it on and off and set the speed.

Belt wise, I went for 15mm that was wire reinforced.
