I can’t seem to find anything that should be attached to these 4 holes in the front and back Z carriage plates.
Am I missing something or are they just extra?

Hey Lain,
It gives you the option to mount the ball screw nut on either the front or rear panel.
I’ve typically mounted to the rear panel only but it gives you options to ease the assembly of the machine.
