Hi all,
I’m building a Root inspired CNC machine, i’ve currently got an MPCNC that doesn’t cut the muster when it comes to stability, I’ve already sourced via a contact I have a load of 40x40x4mm box section and as I’m going for size over cost I’ve decided I’ll need the Root 4 to accommodate 40x40.
I do have every intention of upgrading to ball screws later down the road however for the moment i’d like to just use what I have available, and that is Nema 17’s, pulleys and belts, So i’d like to know if its already been done where the stock Root 4 framing is used but belts fitted in place of the ball screws?
I’m thinking of sideways mounting the steppers on the Z axis and doing a looped belt with an idler (or maybe even 2nd stepper at the other end) much like a 3d printer setup, does anybody know if its been done, and if i should avoid it, why?
FYI i already have lots of 10mm GT2 Belt that can be used until i get the ball screws.
I’m aware larger nema’s are better but for the moment i don’t have them and need a more rigid machine.
