What eletric cables should I use ? (besides the 24/26AWG)

Hi all,

I’ve just finished my build of the ROOT 3, but I’m not particularly happy with the cabling I’ve done.

I’ve chosen to run it with RAMPS 1.4, and Nema 23 23HS41-1804S.

Since I couldn’t found any local suppliers for the 24/26AWG cables, I followed Tom Sanladerer’s advice, and I bought some ethernet flexible cables, with 8 cores in it. I might had it wrong, but the cables I got are cat. 6 wires, and they haye a solid copper core.

Anyway, I’ve managed to finish the build with it, and it works. But still, I want to re-do the cabling.

Is it worth oredring the 24/26AWG cables, or is there any good alternatives to this ?

Best regards,

I believe the solid copper connections will work harden so might be wise to replace them.

Given stepper motors are current driven devices, cable section losses aren’t too critical. providing there is enough stepper motor voltage overhead. (well, if the cables are getting warm, which in unlikely. I wouldn’t expect there to be any issues).

Cable wise - its always good to use the same if not bigger wires that are pre-installed in the stepper motor. in the case of the:

These are 22AWG. so 22 or 20 would be recommended.

Thank for the reply !

Ok, so I’ll try to order some 22AWG flexible cable. Thanks again !
